- Yield: 6 servings 1x
Ingredients
- 12 ounces pasta (penne or rigatoni)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound Italian sausage, cut into pieces
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the pasta (10 minutes): Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Prepare the sausage and vegetables (10 minutes): While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage pieces and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Add the diced onion and garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent and the sausage is fully cooked, about 5 more minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Combine with sauce (5 minutes): In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the marinara sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the ricotta cheese until well combined.
- Assemble the bake (10 minutes): Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the pasta mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the cooked sausage pieces evenly over the top of the pasta mixture.
- Add cheese topping (5 minutes): Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the sausage and pasta.
- Bake the dish (25 minutes): Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Garnish and serve (5 minutes): Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
Notes
For an extra creamy texture, mix in a cup of heavy cream or half-and-half to the sausage and marinara sauce before combining with the pasta. You can also add some sautéed bell peppers or mushrooms for additional flavor and texture.
This dish pairs perfectly with a side of garlic bread and a simple green salad. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheated in the oven or microwave. Enjoy this comforting, cheesy pasta bake with your family and friends!
