Ingredients

Units Scale

For the chicken:

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish

For the rice:

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing the white rice. In a medium saucepan, combine the white rice, water, and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  2. While the rice is cooking, season the chicken pieces with salt and black pepper. Place the flour in a shallow dish, then coat each chicken piece in the flour, shaking off any excess.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the coated chicken pieces and fry until they’re golden brown and cooked through, about 5-6 minutes per side. Transfer the chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, and minced garlic. Pour this mixture into the same skillet and cook for about 2 minutes, until it thickens slightly.
  5. Return the fried chicken pieces to the skillet and toss to coat them in the honey sesame sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Serve the chicken and rice immediately while piping hot.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the amount of honey based on your preferred level of sweetness. For extra heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the honey sesame sauce. To make the dish more colorful and nutritious, add steamed broccoli or stir-fried vegetables. Make sure to use a deep skillet for frying the chicken to prevent oil splatter. Drizzle extra sesame oil and sprinkle more sesame seeds for added flavor and presentation. Enjoy!
