Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, cut into large cubes
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 cup vegetable broth or water
- 4–5 scallions, chopped (green and white parts separated)
- Cooked white rice, for serving
Instructions
- In a large pan or skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the cubed tofu and cook until lightly browned on all sides. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Lower the heat to medium and stir in the soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar. Cook the sauce for 2-3 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
- Return the tofu to the pan and add the vegetable broth or water. Stir gently to coat the tofu in the sauce. Allow it to simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the tofu is fully cooked.
- Stir in the chopped white parts of the scallions, reserving the green parts for garnish.
- Serve the spicy braised tofu over cooked white rice and sprinkle the chopped green scallions on top for a fresh finish.
Notes
Feel free to add your favorite vegetables to the dish, such as bell peppers, broccoli, or snow peas, for added color and nutrients. You can also crumble some toasted peanuts or sesame seeds over the top for a crunchy texture and nutty flavor. Pair this spicy tofu with a cooling cucumber salad or pickled vegetables to balance the heat. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat before serving. Enjoy!
