  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 lb Andouille sausage, sliced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes, with juices
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to your spice preference)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups cooked white rice, for serving
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or pan over medium-high heat, heat the vegetable oil. Add the sliced sausage and cook until it becomes browned and slightly crispy. Remove the sausage from the pan and set it aside.
  2. In the same pan, add the diced onions, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the diced tomatoes with their juices, chicken broth, Creole seasoning, paprika, dried thyme, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper to the pan. Stir well to combine, and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  4. Add the shrimp and cooked sausage back into the pan. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes or until the shrimp is pink and cooked through.
  5. Serve the Southern Style Creole Shrimp and Sausage over a bed of white rice, and garnish with fresh parsley for a burst of color and added freshness.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the level of spiciness to your taste by increasing or reducing the amount of cayenne pepper in the dish. For a smokier flavor, use smoked paprika instead of regular paprika. If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and add it to the pan to thicken the sauce. Add a splash of fresh lemon juice just before serving to enhance the flavors of the Creole dish. Enjoy!

Chef’s tip: This recipe pairs wonderfully with a side of classic Southern cornbread or a simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette dressing.
