Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 12 oz bowtie (farfalle) pasta
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 24 oz jar of marinara sauce
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook the bowtie pasta according to package directions, but shave 2 minutes off the cooking time for al dente pasta. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, drizzle some olive oil. Sauté the onions, garlic, and sliced mushrooms until softened and fragrant.
  3. Add the Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up into small pieces, until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
  4. Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet with the sausage and mushroom mixture, stirring well. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, half of the grated Parmesan, fresh basil, salt, and pepper.
  6. Begin layering your dish in a large baking dish. Start with a layer of the sausage and marinara mixture, then add a layer of bowtie pasta, followed by a dollop of the ricotta mixture. Repeat the layers, finishing with the mozzarella and remaining Parmesan on top.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.

Notes

Baked bowtie lasagna brings a fresh spin to the traditional lasagna, ensuring each bite is filled with cheesy goodness and a delightful pasta crunch. If you’re looking to add a touch more vibrancy to the dish, consider integrating some chopped spinach into the mixture. A side of garlic bread or a fresh green salad can complement this lasagna beautifully. To keep the dish from being too dry, ensure a generous amount of marinara in each layer. And finally, for those who love a bit of spice, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes in the beef mixture can offer just the right kick. Enjoy!
