- Prep Time: 35 minutes + 4-6 hours drying time + 30 minutes setting time
- Cook Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes + drying and setting time
- Yield: 20–24 slices 1x
Ingredients
- 3–4 large oranges
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups water
- 8 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped
- Parchment paper
Instructions
- Prepare the orange slices (10 minutes):
- Wash the oranges thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, slice the oranges into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Remove any seeds.
- Blanch the orange slices (10 minutes):
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the orange slices and blanch for 1 minute. Remove the slices with a slotted spoon and transfer to an ice bath to cool. Drain and pat the slices dry with paper towels.
- Candy the orange slices (1 hour):
- In a large skillet, combine the 2 cups of granulated sugar and 2 cups of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add the orange slices to the sugar syrup in a single layer. Simmer over low heat for about 1 hour, turning the slices occasionally, until the orange peels become translucent.
- Dry the orange slices (4-6 hours or overnight):
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the candied orange slices to a wire rack set over a baking sheet to catch any drips. Let them dry for 4-6 hours or overnight, until they are no longer sticky to the touch.
- Melt the dark chocolate (10 minutes):
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the dark chocolate in 20-second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until completely smooth. Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a double boiler over simmering water.
- Dip the orange slices (15 minutes):
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dip each dried orange slice halfway into the melted dark chocolate, allowing any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.
- Place the dipped orange slices on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with all the orange slices.
- Set the chocolate (30 minutes):
- Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature or refrigerate the dipped orange slices for about 30 minutes, until the chocolate is firm.
Notes
For an extra touch of elegance, you can sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the chocolate before it sets.
These candied orange slices dipped in dark chocolate can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
They make a beautiful and delicious homemade gift or a sophisticated treat to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee!
