Ingredients

Units Scale
For the scones:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (plus more for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For topping:
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or sparkling sugar)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the baking sheet (5 minutes):
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients (5 minutes):
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. Cut in the butter (5 minutes):
    • Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients.
    • Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  4. Add the cherries (1 minute):
    • Gently fold in the chopped dried cherries, making sure they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
  5. Mix the wet ingredients (2 minutes):
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  6. Combine the wet and dry ingredients (2 minutes):
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix—the dough should be slightly crumbly but hold together when pressed.
  7. Shape the scones (5 minutes):
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Gently pat the dough into a disk about 1/2 inch thick.
    • Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the scones, re-rolling the dough as necessary. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush and bake the scones (15-18 minutes):
    • Brush the tops of the scones with a little buttermilk and sprinkle with granulated sugar (or sparkling sugar for a festive touch).
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the scones are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool and serve (5 minutes):
    • Allow the scones to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
    • If desired, dust the cooled scones with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.

Notes

These scones are best enjoyed fresh from the oven, but they can also be stored in an airtight container for up to two days.

You can reheat them in the oven for a few minutes to regain their crisp edges. If you’d like to add an extra layer of indulgence, serve these heart-shaped scones with clotted cream, butter, or a dollop of jam.

Perfect for breakfast in bed or a sweet surprise for someone special, these scones are sure to win hearts!
