Units Scale

For the burgers:

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 pita bread pockets

Toppings:

  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • Lettuce leaves

For the tzatziki sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber, grated and excess water squeezed out
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce (10 minutes): In a bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, chopped dill, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well until combined. Refrigerate to allow the flavors to meld while you prepare the burgers.
  2. Mix and Form the Patties (10 minutes): In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into four patties that are slightly smaller than the size of your pita pockets.
  3. Cook the Patties (10 minutes): Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach the desired doneness.
  4. Prepare the Vegetables (5 minutes): Slice the red onion and tomato. Wash and dry the lettuce leaves.
  5. Assemble the Pita Burgers (5 minutes): Cut each pita bread in half to open the pocket. Place a lettuce leaf inside each pita pocket, add a cooked patty, and then top with slices of tomato and red onion.
  6. Add Tzatziki Drizzle and Serve (2 minutes): Generously drizzle Tzatziki sauce over the fillings. Serve immediately.

Notes

This Greek pita burger is a festive and flavorful option for any meal. For the best experience, ensure your pita bread is fresh and soft to prevent tearing when stuffed.

The key to perfecting this recipe lies in balancing the spices in the meat and the tanginess of the Tzatziki. Experiment with adding feta cheese or olives for an even more authentic Greek flavor.

Remember, the secret to a great Tzatziki is using strained yogurt and thoroughly dried cucumber to keep the sauce thick and creamy. Enjoy your meal!
