Craving a comforting, savory dish? Look no further than this hamburger steak recipe! Envision succulent patties, golden-brown mushrooms, and onions, all enveloped in a rich gravy. This dish is not only delicious but incredibly simple to make. Let’s begin!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Form into four even patties.
  2. Heat the olive oil in your cast iron pan over medium heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, roughly 5 minutes per side. Remove the patties and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the butter, mushrooms, and onions. Sauté until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms have browned.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the mushroom-onion mixture and stir, letting it cook for about a minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps and create a smooth gravy.
  5. Return the patties to the pan, covering them with the gravy. Let everything simmer together until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.

Notes

Hamburger steak is all about achieving that gorgeous sear on the patties. Don’t rush it; give each side its time! If you’re feeling adventurous, try adding a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra depth. For a perfect meal, serve these juicy steaks with mashed potatoes or green beans on the side. And hey, if you’ve got leftovers, they make a wickedly tasty sandwich filling!
