The combination of juicy steak and the robust flavors of the sauce make this recipe a standout crowd-pleaser, bringing the flavors of an Italian trattoria straight to your table. Yum!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 boneless steak cuts (such as ribeye or sirloin)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Red pepper flakes, to taste (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

For the side salad:

  • Arugula
  • Yellow peppers
  • Sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Balsamic vinaigrette

Instructions

  1. Season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the steaks and cook to your desired doneness (about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, adjust based on thickness). Remove the steaks and set them aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook until softened and slightly caramelized.
  5. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.
  6. Pour in the diced tomatoes and their juices, followed by the dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes if using. Simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Return the cooked steaks to the skillet, spooning the Pizzaiola sauce over them. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat the steaks through.
  8. Serve the steaks with a generous ladle of Pizzaiola sauce on top, garnished with fresh basil leaves.
  9. For the side salad, toss the arugula, peppers, onion, and tomatoes with balsamic vinaigrette.

Notes

To enhance the steak’s flavor, let it rest for a few minutes after cooking before slicing. Adjust the level of red pepper flakes to suit your desired spice level. Serve the steak and Pizzaiola sauce over creamy mashed potatoes or a bed of pasta for a heartier meal. Don’t forget to pair your dish with a good Italian red wine for an authentic experience. Enjoy!
