The Muffuletta is a classic Italian sandwich that originated in New Orleans and has become a beloved culinary icon. Packed with a flavorful combination of ingredients, this sandwich is known for its distinctive taste and texture. The Muffuletta features a round loaf of bread that is loaded with layers of olive salad, roasted peppers, artichoke spread, ham, salami, cheese, and other traditional fixings. Let’s begin!

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 46 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 round loaf of Italian bread or Muffuletta bread
  • 1/2 cup olive salad or giardiniera (chopped olives, pickled vegetables, and herbs)
  • 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, sliced
  • 1/4 cup artichoke spread or marinated artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
  • 46 slices of deli ham
  • 46 slices of Genoa salami
  • 46 slices of provolone cheese
  • Optional additions: lettuce, tomato, sliced mortadella, capicola, or other Italian cold cuts
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the round loaf of bread horizontally, creating a top and bottom half. Hollow out some of the bread from the center to create space for the fillings.
  2. Spread the olive salad or giardiniera evenly on the bottom half of the bread. Layer the roasted red peppers and artichoke spread on top.
  3. Arrange the deli ham, Genoa salami, and provolone cheese over the olive salad mixture. Add any optional additional meats and the lettuce and tomato if desired.
  4. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the filling to season, then place the top half of the bread over the layered ingredients.
  5. Press down gently on the sandwich to compress the fillings together. Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in plastic wrap or foil, and let it sit for at least 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  6. Unwrap the sandwich, cut it into wedges or individual servings, and serve.

Notes

For best results, choose high-quality ingredients, such as freshly baked Italian bread, premium deli meats, and a flavorful olive salad or giardiniera. Allow the sandwich to rest after assembling to allow the flavors to blend. This step enhances the taste and texture of the Muffuletta. Feel free to customize your Muffuletta by adding other ingredients like sliced mortadella, capicola, or even a layer of melted cheese for extra indulgence. Don’t be shy with the olive salad or giardiniera—its briny and tangy flavors are the heart and soul of this sandwich. Serve the Muffuletta at room temperature or slightly warmed for the best eating experience. Enjoy!
