Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, for cooking
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 slices of hearty bread, toasted
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined and form four oval-shaped patties.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, until they develop a nice crust and are cooked through. Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook until they become tender and slightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms and stir well to coat. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream. Let the gravy simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  6. To serve, place a slice of toasted bread on each plate, top with a beef patty, and generously spoon the mushroom and onion gravy over the steak.
  7. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a burst of color and added flavor.

Notes

Feel free to customize the seasoning of the beef patties to your preference with additional herbs and spices such as thyme, rosemary, or paprika. Do make sure to slice the onions and mushrooms thinly for even cooking and great texture in the gravy. For extra richness, add a splash of red wine to the gravy before adding the beef broth. Serve this delightful Salisbury Steak on Toast with a side of creamy mashed potatoes or buttery peas for the ultimate comfort meal experience. Enjoy!
