  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until well blended.
  3. Dip each shrimp into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat it in the seasoned flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour and place the coated shrimp on a plate.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Carefully drop the coated shrimp into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry the shrimp for 2-3 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked shrimp to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Notes

Use fresh or thawed shrimp for the best results. The shrimp should be deveined and without the shells for easy eating. Get creative with the seasoning! Feel free to add spices like cayenne pepper, Old Bay seasoning, or dried herbs to the flour mixture for an extra kick of flavor. Maintain the oil temperature throughout the frying process. If the oil is too hot, the shrimp will cook too quickly and become overdone. If the oil is not hot enough, the shrimp will absorb more oil and won’t become as crispy. Work in small batches when frying to ensure even cooking and crispy results. Overcrowding the pan can cause the shrimp to steam instead of fry. Serve your popcorn shrimp with a variety of dipping sauces like tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, or a zesty aioli for an added burst of flavor. Enjoy!
