  • Yield: 4 sandwiches 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 slices of hearty bread
  • 8 slices of thick-sliced deli ham
  • 8 slices of your favorite cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or gouda work great)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup panko (optional for extra crunch)
  • Cooking spray or additional butter for frying

Instructions

  1. Lay out 4 slices of bread and layer 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheese on each, creating 4 ham and cheese sandwiches.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper to create the egg wash.
  3. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter.
  4. Dip each sandwich into the egg wash, making sure both sides are coated.
  5. If using panko, sprinkle gently on top of the egg-washed bread (both sides)
  6. Place the dipped sandwiches onto the skillet and cook until golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Add more butter as needed.
  7. Once both sides are crispy and the cheese is melted, remove the sandwiches from the skillet.
  8. Let the sandwiches rest for a minute before slicing them diagonally.

Notes

Experiment with different types of bread to find your favorite pairing. Sourdough, whole wheat, or French all work well. If you’d like, add a layer of Dijon mustard for an extra kick of flavor or top with a fried egg for an extra protein boost. Pair your sandwich with a simple green salad or a bowl of tomato soup for a well-rounded meal. Enjoy!
