  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone or American cheese
  • Optional toppings: mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak and cook for 2-3 minutes until browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil and sauté the sliced onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms until they are soft and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Return the cooked steak to the skillet and toss everything together to combine. Cook for an additional minute to heat through.
  4. Split the hoagie rolls lengthwise and place two slices of cheese on one side of each roll. Toast the rolls under the broiler for a minute or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Divide the steak and vegetable mixture among the toasted rolls. Add any optional toppings you desire, such as mayonnaise, ketchup, or pickles. You can also put another layer of cheese on top of the steak and veggies if desired.

Notes

For an authentic Philly Cheesesteak, use thinly sliced ribeye steak. If you can’t find ribeye, you can also use sirloin or flank steak. Choose a crusty hoagie roll that can hold up to the juicy filling. You can lightly toast the rolls to add a bit of crunch. Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese. Provolone and American cheese are classic choices, but you can also try Swiss, mozzarella, or even Cheez Whiz for a unique twist. Customize your sandwiches with additional toppings such as sautéed jalapeños, hot sauce, or fried eggs for a breakfast-inspired version. Enjoy!
