Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 fluffy burger buns
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Butter, for toasting buns
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, beaten egg, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together until well-combined.
  2. Shape the meat mixture into four oval-shaped meatloaf patties, about the size of the burger buns.
  3. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of oil. Cook the meatloaf patties for about 4-5 minutes per side until cooked through and nicely browned.
  4. While the meatloaf patties are cooking, lightly butter the insides of the burger buns and toast them on a separate skillet or griddle until golden and crispy.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches by placing a generous dollop of tomato sauce on the bottom bun, followed by a meatloaf patty. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  6. Place the prepared sandwiches under the broiler for a couple of minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, then cover with the top half of the burger buns.

Notes

Feel free to customize your meatloaf by adding diced onions, bell peppers, or shredded carrots for extra flavor and nutrition. For a zesty twist, mix a spoonful of pesto sauce into the tomato sauce before topping the meatloaf. If you don’t have Parmesan cheese, you can use shredded cheddar or provolone for a gooey cheese alternative. Make it a complete meal by serving your sandwich with a side of crispy fries or a simple green salad. Enjoy!

Chef’s tip: This recipe can also be made using leftover meatloaf, just slice it and proceed with the assembly and toasting steps.
