Pasties are a delightful and satisfying dish that originated in Cornwall, England. These savory hand pies feature a flaky pastry crust filled with a hearty combination of seasoned meat and potatoes. Perfect for a quick and tasty meal, these pasties can be made in just 30 minutes, making them a convenient option for busy days. Let’s begin!

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 46 pasties 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 package of pre-made pie crust (2 crusts)
  • 1 pound ground meat (beef, chicken, or turkey)
  • 1 cup diced potatoes
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground meat over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the diced potatoes, onions, minced garlic, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt, and pepper to the skillet with the cooked meat. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
  4. Roll out the pre-made pie crusts on a lightly floured surface. Using a round cutter or a small plate, cut out circles from the pie crusts, approximately 6 inches in diameter.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the meat and potato filling onto one half of each pie crust circle, leaving a small border around the edges. Fold the other half of the crust over the filling and press the edges together to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch if desired.
  6. Place the assembled pasties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops of the pasties with the beaten egg to create a golden-brown crust.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pasties are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Make sure to fully cook the filling before assembling the pasties to ensure the potatoes are tender and the flavors are well developed. If desired, you can add additional vegetables such as carrots or peas to the filling for added texture and flavor. These pasties can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated for later enjoyment, making them a convenient option for meal prep.

Leafy Greens Side Salad

Kick things off with a bed of your favorite mixed greens—whether it's spinach, arugula, romaine, or a combination of all. Next, layer on thinly sliced red onion, adding a sharp and colorful zing. Slice a cucumber into neat rounds, offering cool and refreshing bites throughout the salad. Halve some juicy cherry tomatoes and scatter them in, lending their sweet-tart bursts. Finally, dot the salad with pitted green olives, introducing a briny depth. For dressing, a simple vinaigrette made of olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper does wonders. Drizzle it over the salad, toss everything gently, and serve.

Homemade Unsweetened Iced Tea

Begin by choosing a quality black, green, or herbal tea – your preference will set the tone. Bring a pot of fresh water to a gentle boil and steep your tea bags or loose leaves, letting the tea brew a bit stronger than if you were making it hot, as it will mellow when chilled. Once you’ve achieved that deep, aromatic infusion, remove the tea and let it cool to room temperature. Transfer your tea to a pitcher and pop it into the fridge to cool down and intensify the flavors. When serving, fill a glass with ice cubes, pour over the chilled tea, and maybe add a slice of lemon or sprig of mint for a touch of flair.
